Addiction Treatment in the UK

Three Fold Treatment

Detox

Two decades on, our foundational principles remain steadfast. Over these years, we’ve successfully assisted thousands in overcoming various addiction challenges.
Ark House is staffed entirely by individuals who are in recovery themselves, each committed to a 12 Step program. Our staff are not only experts in their respective fields but also qualified counsellors and psychotherapists. This expertise allows us to implement our 12 Step program effectively and safely within the time constraints available to work with each individual.

We ensure a secure environment that operates with round-the-clock support, enabling individuals to confront and address the psychological underpinnings of their addiction issues. Our cannabis addiction treatment is designed to offer the same level of comprehensive care and support.

Group therapy

Treatment

The treatment addresses psychological addiction — the need to self-medicate or habitual behaviours. It involves individuals taking an honest look at themselves, acknowledging the impact of substances on their health, life, and loved ones, and breaking through the denial associated with addiction. We support individuals in identifying and altering destructive behaviour patterns, helping those affected develop new, healthier habits to control how they feel and protect them through alcohol addiction treatment where substance use is no longer the go-to solution for managing their feelings.

Ark House provides a comprehensive residential rehabilitation experience, guiding individuals through our established in-house 12 Step Therapy program.

Fellowship

Aftercare

Addiction is recognised as a chronic disease, which like any disease, disrupts body or mind function and presents with specific symptoms. While some diseases like influenza can be cured, others like Type I Diabetes are managed on an ongoing basis. Addiction and alcoholism fall into this latter category, requiring continuous management to prevent worsening of the condition and relapse. Our cannabis addiction treatment for example, offers tailored support for ongoing recovery.

Following initial treatment, which aims to stabilise and mitigate the immediate symptoms of addiction, ongoing daily management is crucial. The most effective approach to this is the 12 Steps, alongside engagement with various support fellowships like AA and NA.

At Ark House, we offer an extensive alcohol addiction treatment utilises our in-house resources but also connects individuals with local 12 Step fellowships.

The Treatment Program

Lectures

Aftercare

Understanding addiction as a dynamic process and recognising the individual’s unique place within it is essential. Our structured cycle of 28 lectures/sessions addresses this, offering solutions through the 12 Step program. These sessions serve as a comprehensive resource, laying a foundational understanding of addiction and helping individuals recognise themselves within these dynamics.

Group Therapy & Group Process

Peer mentoring plays a crucial role in penetrating the denial often associated with addiction, allowing individuals to see themselves in others facing similar challenges. This recognition can be profoundly therapeutic. Our structured group sessions focus on specific topics and intended outcomes, fostering effective treatment of addiction.

The group process is about how individuals interact and achieve collectively in a group setting. In addiction recovery, this often involves addressing reactions to others’ behaviours openly and without fear of retaliation, promoting healthy change and growth.

Gambling Addiction

Problem gambling is the persistent urge to gamble despite the negative outcomes it may cause. It is often recognised by the harm it causes to the gambler or others, not merely by the gambler’s actions. Problem gambling creates significant challenges in limiting time and money spent, which results in detrimental effects on the individual, others, and the community at large.

Severe problem gambling, when meeting specific criteria, is diagnosed as clinical pathological gambling, which incurs considerable social and familial costs. Previously categorised by the American Psychiatric Association as an impulse control disorder, pathological gambling is now considered more akin to substance misuse disorders. This is due to the similar ways in which both activate the brain’s reward mechanisms, unlike disorders like OCD, which are driven by overactive fear responses from the brain. Problem gambling often co-occurs with alcohol issues, with both conditions driven by an underlying desire to alter one’s emotional state or chase a euphoric experience.

The 12 Steps

Step 1

We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable.

Step 2

Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Step 3

Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

Step 4

Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

Step 5

Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

Step 6

We're entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Step 7

Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

Step 8

Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

Step 9

Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

Step 10

Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

Step 11

Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

Step 12

Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
