What Are Benzodiazepines?
Benzodiazepines — often called benzos — are psychoactive medications that slow activity in the central nervous system, promoting calm and relaxation. They are commonly prescribed to treat:

- Muscle spasms
- Seizures or epilepsy
- Alcohol withdrawal
Common examples include Valium (diazepam), Xanax (alprazolam), Ativan (lorazepam), Librium (chlordiazepoxide), Temazepam, and Klonopin (clonazepam).
While effective when used short-term, benzodiazepines carry a high risk of dependence. The body quickly adapts to their presence, meaning higher doses are needed to achieve the same effect — a cycle that can lead to addiction and withdrawal symptoms when trying to stop.
Why Benzodiazepines Are Addictive
Benzodiazepines increase the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) — a neurotransmitter that reduces brain activity and promotes calm. With long-term or high-dose use, the brain becomes reliant on this artificial calming effect, making it harder to function without the drug.
