Alcoholism

Treatment For Alcoholism at Ark House

Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive, and potentially fatal disease that affects not just the individual, but their family, friends, and community. It damages physical and mental health, disrupts relationships, and erodes self-worth.

At Ark House, we understand alcohol addiction from both a professional and deeply personal perspective. Every member of our counselling and psychotherapy team has completed a 12-Step recovery programme themselves. This lived experience means we don’t just treat addiction — we understand it. Our approach combines clinical insight with empathy, ensuring that every person who walks through our doors receives authentic, person-centred care grounded in both evidence and experience.

Understanding Alcoholism

Alcohol addiction, also known as Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), is more than just drinking too much — it’s a disease that affects the brain, body, and behaviour. Over time, alcohol changes the way the brain processes reward, stress, and self-control, making it increasingly difficult to stop even when you want to.

Common signs of alcohol addiction include:

  • Drinking more or for longer than intended
  • Feeling unable to cut down or stop despite consequences
  • Neglecting responsibilities or relationships
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not drinking
  • Using alcohol to cope with emotions or daily stress

Alcoholism doesn’t develop overnight — and neither does recovery. At Ark House, we help our residents understand the why behind their addiction, so they can build the tools and resilience needed for lasting change.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcoholism

Physical symptoms
  • Increased tolerance to alcohol (needing more to feel the same effect)
  • Shaking, sweating, or nausea when not drinking
  • Poor sleep, headaches, or frequent hangovers
  • Weight changes or loss of appetite
  • Liver-related issues, stomach pain, or frequent illness

If you or someone you care about recognises these signs, reaching out for support can make a real difference. Alcohol withdrawal can be serious without medical support, and relapse risks are real — but help, understanding, and recovery are always possible, and you don’t have to face it alone.

The Risks of Alcohol Use

Even moderate or regular alcohol consumption can have serious health consequences. These may include:
Physical health risks: liver disease, pancreatitis, high blood pressure, heart problems, and digestive issues
Neurological issues: memory problems, impaired decision-making, tremors, or seizures
Mental health effects: anxiety, depression, irritability, or alcohol-induced psychosis
Overdose and dependency risk: excessive alcohol consumption or withdrawal can be life-threatening
Alcohol use can also strain relationships, impact work or education, cause financial difficulties, and erode self-esteem. Seeking help early can prevent long-term harm and support a safe, fulfilling, and substance-free life.
