Family Support
Family Support Group
At Ark House, we understand that addiction affects not just the individual, but also their loved ones. That’s why we offer dedicated family support and run a Family Support Group every Saturday.
Family members, friends, and significant others can attend to receive guidance, share experiences, and access emotional support completely free of charge. These sessions are designed to help families navigate the challenges of addiction, improve communication, and learn strategies to support their loved one’s recovery.
Importantly, support isn’t limited to the duration of your treatment. Families can continue attending the group even after the resident has completed their programme, ensuring ongoing guidance, connection, and reassurance throughout the recovery journey.
Family Support at Ark House Rehab
Addiction affects more than just the individual struggling with substance use or behavioural issues—it impacts the whole family. At Ark House, we recognise that families are deeply affected and often carry their own emotional burden, which can unintentionally hinder the recovery process. Our approach ensures that families receive the support, education, and guidance they need to heal alongside their loved one.
Understanding Family Dynamics
Families of people with addiction often experience:
- Denial: Believing the addiction isn’t severe or pretending everything is fine.
- Suppressed Emotions: Avoiding feelings of anger, sadness, or frustration to prevent upsetting the addict.
- Attempts to Control: Trying repeatedly to change the addicted individual’s behaviour, often to no avail.
- Role Reversals: Children or younger family members taking on adult responsibilities, disrupting healthy boundaries.
- Co-dependency: Developing behaviours that enable the addiction or prioritise the addict’s needs over their own.
These dynamics can leave families feeling powerless, anxious, isolated, or burdened by guilt and shame. Often, family members unknowingly perpetuate the cycle of addiction by taking on the addict’s responsibilities or protecting them from consequences.
Supporting Families Through Recovery
At Ark House, we provide structured family support programmes designed to address these challenges and foster lasting healing:
- Family Workshops: Practical sessions that teach communication skills, boundary-setting, and coping strategies. These workshops provide a safe, non-judgmental space for families to share experiences, ask questions, and connect with others facing similar challenges.
- Family Interventions: Where appropriate, we provide guided intervention services to help families approach their loved one with care and clarity, supporting a successful treatment entry.
- Referrals to Support Groups: We connect families with ongoing support networks and specialised resources to ensure continued guidance beyond the rehab setting.
