Opiate & Heroin Addiction

Heroin and Opiate Addiction Treatment at Ark House Rehab

Understanding Heroin and Opiate Addiction

Heroin and opiates are powerful sedative drugs that slow the body’s systems and alter the way the brain processes pain and emotion. They act on the central nervous system to block pain messages, reduce anxiety, and create feelings of warmth, calm, and detachment.

While prescribed opiates such as morphine, codeine, oxycodone, and tramadol can be effective for managing pain under medical supervision, prolonged or unsupervised use can easily lead to dependence. Heroin—an illegal derivative of morphine—is one of the most addictive substances known, capable of taking hold after only a few uses.

At Ark House Rehab, we understand that addiction to heroin or opiates is not a moral failing or a lack of willpower—it is a chronic, relapsing medical condition that requires comprehensive treatment. Our recovery programmes combine medical care, therapy, and emotional support to help individuals rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.

What Are Opiates and Opioids?

Opiates are natural compounds derived from the opium poppy, including heroin, codeine, and morphine.

Opioids, such as fentanyl, methadone, and buprenorphine, are synthetic or semi-synthetic drugs that act on the same brain receptors.

Both types can cause intense euphoria by flooding the brain with dopamine—the “reward” chemical. Over time, the brain’s chemistry adapts, leading to tolerance (needing more to achieve the same effect) and dependence (feeling unwell without the drug).

How Heroin and Opiate Addiction Develops

Addiction often begins with a desire to manage pain, stress, or emotional trauma. The temporary relief opiates provide can quickly become a trap, as the brain begins to rely on the drug for balance and normal function.

With continued use, users experience:

  • Powerful cravings and preoccupation with obtaining the drug
  • Withdrawal symptoms such as sweating, shaking, and pain when not using
  • Increased tolerance leading to higher doses and greater risk of overdose
  • Loss of control despite serious health, social, or financial consequences

Heroin and opiate addiction can take over every aspect of life—but recovery is possible with the right treatment and support.

Signs and Symptoms of Heroin and Opiate Addiction

Ketamine addiction can show up in many ways — physical, psychological, and behavioural. Recognising the signs early is key to getting help.

Physical Symptoms

  • Drowsiness or sudden “nodding off”
  • Slowed breathing or heart rate
  • Constricted (pinpoint) pupils
  • Weight loss and poor appetite
  • Frequent flu-like symptoms
  • Track marks or infections from injecting

Psychological and Behavioural Signs

  • Cravings and compulsive use
  • Depression, anxiety, or mood swings
  • Lying, secrecy, or withdrawal from loved ones
  • Neglecting responsibilities or personal care
  • Financial difficulties and risk-taking behaviour

The Dangers of Opiate and Heroin Use

Repeated heroin or opiate use has devastating effects on both body and mind. Over time, it can cause:

  • Overdose – slowed breathing, unconsciousness, and potentially death
  • Brain and organ damage due to oxygen deprivation
  • Collapsed veins and infections from injecting
  • Increased risk of hepatitis, HIV, and sepsis
  • Severe constipation, hormonal imbalance, and immune suppression
  • Depression and suicidal thoughts

Overdose is a medical emergency. If someone is unconscious, has shallow breathing, or pinpoint pupils, call 999 immediately and administer naloxone if available.

Heroin and Opiate Withdrawal

When someone dependent on opiates stops using, their body goes into withdrawal as it struggles to rebalance. Though rarely life-threatening, the process can be extremely uncomfortable and distressing.

Common withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Restlessness and agitation
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Sweating and chills (“cold turkey”)
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
  • Anxiety, insomnia, and intense cravings

Withdrawal symptoms from short-acting opiates like heroin typically begin 8–24 hours after the last use and last 4–10 days. For longer-acting opioids such as methadone, symptoms can persist up to 20 days.
